I have recently started to dabble in saw sharpening. I went to grab my Millers Falls #214 saw set to give it a try, but I had forgotten how beat up it was. So I decided it needed to be cleaned up before I could use it.
Before:
This saw set was introduced in the 1938 catalog.
By the 1949 catalog, they were being painted grey/red.
I have seen several examples of the steel guide being L shaped in both colors. I think that in use that might be the more preferable style but I need to find one before I can test that theory.
The disassembly was fairly straight forward. There was one pin holding the handle and another keeping the spring under pressure. There were also 2 small set screws buried in hole for the screw that attaches the steel guide to the body. I think they keep the plunger aligned.
Here is a picture of the saw set disassembled, evaporusted, and wire wheeled.
The plated parts cleaned up nice. The black painted parts got a couple of coats of black enamel spray paint.
